Katalin Hegedüs Gönczy has written an excellent book about the Art of Accompanying Lieder, which should be of interest to professional pianists and music lovers alike. Drawing upon her own vast experience, she deftly analyses individual songs of Schubert, Schumann and Wolf in terms of form, harmony, character and place in the development of Lied history. Later chapters are devoted to spotlighting problems with which "accompanists" must contend on their - not always smooth - path to become recognized and appreciated as collaborative artists. I work as a coach and accompanist, mostly with singers, and I had the opportunity to perform with singers and other instumental musicians in many concerts and recitals worldwide.I have also taught chamber music and Lieder literature at the University of Miskolc, and at Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, on the Pedagogical Institut as well.
