THE BIOFORTIFICATION CONTINUUM
Details
The Millennium Development Goals were replaced with Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 by the United Nations, which constitutes 17 goals meant to be achieved by 2030. Among these goals include ending hunger and poverty. Achieving food and nutrition security in this day and age in a sustainable manner is paramount. As communities engage in production of biofortified foods, ending hunger, poverty, equity and women empowerment are achieved. Consumption of insufficient diets with critical micronutrients (iron, zinc, and vitamin A) which account for a significant share of vitamin and mineral-related diseases is projected to be problematic in the year 2050.As part of addressing the hidden hunger problem, plenty has been done regarding biofortification in both developed and developing countries.Undernutrition, micronutrient deficiency, overweight and obesity are a number one risk factor in the global burden of disease. Economically, poor nutrition denies communities the opportunity to grow.
