The "Black Wave
Details
Partisan films are currently 'in' in the successor states of the former Yugoslavia. The films from the 1950s to 1970s, in which the good Yugoslav partisans fight against evil Nazi occupiers, are broadcast in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia at prime time and keep a large audience of all ages glued to the television. Behind this, a kind of nostalgia can be discerned, as well as the wish that this Yugoslavia should still exist, for which the partisans fought. It is probably clear that in these films the good partisans always win heroically. The partisan films are glorifying, catchy, with a clear pattern of good and evil, like comic books. The plot is very simple and the genre is monotonous, similar to the spaghetti western. Ironically, if you buy a DVD of these partisan films nowadays, you can choose in the menu whether the film should run with subtitles in Bosnian, Croatian or Serbian, which is basically the same thing. The actors speak Serbo-Croatian, which everyone understands.
