Over the past few years, much effort has been placed in developing a surgical technique to overcome this problem of bone resorption. To fulfill both functional and aesthetic requirements for implant placement in the residual alveolar bone, the plan may include placement of an implant in concert with ridge expansion procedures. Several techniques have been developed for the placement of dental implants in an effort to shorten the length of treatment, avoid a second surgical appointment, reduce the use of additional surgical sites, reduce challenges to the patient, and decrease patient morbidity. Ridge augmentation procedures available for implant placement include bone grafting and bone-guided regeneration which are time consuming and require longer treatment time.The bone spreader technique involves horizontal augmentation with minimal trauma for simultaneous implant placement. It includes a multitude of procedures like the alveolar ridge split technique with chisels & mallet to ridge expansion with osteotomes, screw type condensers .The nuances, armamentarium, advantages and disadvantages of each technique has been coupled with the recent developments in this literary work...
