Snowboarding became one of the most popular sports
in the last years. It was even one of the fastest
growing sports in the United States right after
Skateboarding. The trend of going down the slopes on
a board spilt over into Europe and is by now an
approved sport not only in the alpine but also in
the freestyle area and is in both disciplines part
of the Olympic Winter Games. Events such as the
Air&Style in Munich, Germany and the Burton European
Open in Laax, Switzerland are already for years
acquainted not only among snowboarders. The author
Julia Elena Worlitschek analysis the development of
snowboarding and the Burton European Open. She
considers historical facts, image, media
cooperations and sponsors. Moreover the relation
between the Burton European Open and the positioning
of Laax as a snowboarding destination as well as the
