The Caspian Basin

Given its strategic location and the discovery of
large oil and gas reserves, the Caspian Basin has
evolved into a focal point of global attention
following the disintegration of the Soviet Union in

1991. At the same time, the region and its immediate
      surroundings have since been plagued by a multitude
      of conflicts, ranging from ethnic and territorial
      disputes to persistent disagreement regarding the
      unresolved legal status of the Caspian Sea. This book
      examines the impact of these disputes on the energy
      supply potential of the Caspian Basin. Furthermore,
      the importance of the region s oil and gas reserves
      as a means for the European Union to enhance its
      energy security is assessed. The book is addressed to
      anybody professionally involved or personally
      interested in this part of the world.
