Murph gulped as Sam Nicholls swung alongside him, so close he could taste the stink of cigarettes.
"So your Aboriginal friend was the last person seen with a dead Federal agent! And then you just happen to turn up on the scene?”
 "No, it wasn’t like that…"
"You're goin' to jail, son!" Nicholls banged the table.
"Me? What did I do?" Murph was suddenly scared. Really scared.
"Conspiracy to murder, 20 years jail … maybe more for killing a Government agent when there's a war on!” the furious agent glared at him.
Rose placed a hand on Nicholls' shoulder.
"Thank you Agent Nicholls," she said calmly. "You've done a great job. I'll take it from here."
Nicholls continued to stare down Murph, who was sweating profusely.
"Go get yourself a coffee," Rose said, pulling rank. "I'll need you back here in 10 minutes for processing."
Nicholls snorted angrily, then whirled around and stomped out of the room.
Murph started to protest, but Rose held a finger in the air, waiting until the door clicked shut behind him. He couldn't wait any longer.
"I didn't have anything to do with it!” he stood with his palms outstretched, worry etched on his face.
"I know that," Rose said quietly.
 "Banjo didn't do it either!"
Rose shooed Murph to one side, then grabbed his chair and dragged it behind her. Without a word, she positioned the chair next to the door, propping it under the handle of the door.
Murph raised his eyebrows and started to speak, but again Rose silenced him with a look.
"Good people do bad things under pressure. Especially, when they're trapped," she said, checking the door handle was firmly stuck.
"Not Banjo, he never hurt anyone."
"I believe you," Rose said sincerely.
She smiled and let it linger. Murph frowned.
"I know you didn't kill Jasper Remington, neither did Banjo," she stepped close to Murph. "The problem is, I can't prove who did …"
She pulled a snub-nose pistol from her shoulder holster.
Murph stared at the gun, then the jammed door, and stepped back in horror.
 "What …?” he gasped.
"So, while I know that you aren't a killer," Rose cocked the gun. "It would be very helpful to me if some powerful people in this city … believed that you were!"
 "No! Wait!" Murph yelled.
Rose gritted her teeth… then turned the gun towards her left arm … and pulled the trigger!
