THE EDUCATION PLAN: IS IT A NEAR MISS ?

This book examines the delivery of education to
Support Services staff at New Vista Society (NVS), a
long-term care facility. The author answers the
question: what are the educational needs of Support
Services staff and how can a system of near miss
reporting be implemented thereby creating continued
opportunities for learning?
The research establishes the application of heutagogy
(self-determined learning), capacity development, and
group education processes to ensure learning for a
unionized group of staff. Further, the research
establishes the need for knowledge management systems
to ensure near misses traditionally associated with
error are recreated as opportunities for learning.
Key to the findings are the need to plan, schedule,
and provide educational opportunities. By supporting
the development of meaningful educational systems, an
employer will foster the capacity of Support Services
staff to provide necessary services for residents.

Autorentext
Margaret Ann MacLennan, BComm and MA, took her undergraduate
degree in Hotel and Food Administration at the University of
Guelph. Since 1980, she has worked in Health Care. She completed
her MA, Leadership Training at Royal Roads University in 2006.
She now works as Director of Food Services and Education with the
New Vista Society in Burnaby, BC.
