The Effects of Policing on Serving Police Officers

A wide body of literature has argued that police officers can be negatively affected by some of their job-related duties. This study explored the effects of investigating violent crime on the aggression levels of serving police officers. A self-reporting Buss Perry aggression questionnaire was used to capture aggression levels from police officers across two types of police departments. It comprises of serving male and female police officers from specialized departments of the Royal St. Lucian Police Force.

I have been a police officer within the Royal St. Lucia Police Force for the past ten years. Having worked in an operational department, I have been exposed to high levels of violence and violent crime. It is against this backdrop that I have carried out research into the effects of the investigation of these violent crime on police officers.
