The Eighteenth-Century British Verse Epistle

This is the first book to cover the whole range of epistolary verse in the period, including the discursive type favoured by Pope and the familiar and dramatic epistles. It advances a new model for defining the form, demonstrates the form's importance in the period, and pays attention to non-canonical epistles by women and labouring-class writers.

BILL OVERTON is Professor of Literary Studies at Loughborough University, UK. His most recent books are The Novel of Female Adultery: Love and Gender in Continental European Fiction 1830-1900 (1996), Fictions of Female Adultery: Theories and Circumtexts 1684-1890 (2002) and A Letter to My Love: Love Poems by Women First Published in the Barbados Gazette, 1731-1737 (2001).
