The environment in question: the public arena of debate in Maricá/Brazil

The municipality of Maricá/RJ, known for its tourist attractions, has also attracted a considerable number of pre-salt industrial exploration projects in recent years. One of these is the project to build the Port of Jaconé, an important part of Comperj's logistics. Far from being a consensual development project, it has made Maricá an important stage in the environmental and political-ideological struggles in the state of Rio de Janeiro, constituting an arena for public debate, mobilizing various actors (including environmentalists, residents and friends of Maricá, businesspeople, state agents and politicians, fishermen, etc.) around the environmental issue. Thus, through qualitative research, we sought to carry out an investigation aimed at capturing the meanings of the discourses, the strategies, interests and intentions mobilized in the process of constructing the environmental problem around the Port of Jaconé in Maricá.
