The Importance of Non-Verbal Communication

This book discusses the importance of non-verbal communication in the helping relationship. The text emphasizes that, as a being of multiple relationships, communication is one of the essential components of human life. It shows that communication is a complex phenomenon that far transcends the limits of words and analyzes the various modalities of non-verbal communication such as body contact, body movement and attitude, external appearance, messages implicit in speech, spatial factors and silence. It presents some general considerations about the helping relationship and discusses the skills and procedure of the four steps inherent in this process: attuning, responding, personalizing and guiding. The article proposes to consider the importance of non-verbal communication in order for the helping relationship process to be successful.
