The ingenuity of the handyman at François Jacob

For François Jacob, nature is a blind and demented tinkerer. Yet, we are greatly amazed by her works, as if she were an artist. Moreover, the organization of living systems manifests an ethical, altruistic character, which is perceived by sociobiologists. In reality, the process of natural selection is motivated, leading to the perfection and beauty of its works by cutting here and pasting there for structural and functional readjustment: it is a tinkerer of genius. Moreover, natural selection is not strictly a blind tinkerer, but because it has a purpose which is the perfection and beauty of its work, it leaves unsuspected a hidden and conscious intention.
