This book is an exploration of the phenomenon of horror from an unusual angle. Focusing on reading specific examples of literature from Romanticism to Modernism, the study brings together the phenomenon of horror with the topical concepts of experience and intermediality and highlights the complex relations they present.

Jarkko Toikkanen teaches literature as a university lecturer in English Language, Literature and Translation at the University of Tampere, Finland. Previous appointments include Visiting Research Fellowship at the University of Westminster, London, UK. He has published the co-edited collection of articles The Grotesque and the Unnatural (2011).
