The journey to democratization

The book examines the potential consequences of democratization and the application of liberal democratic reforms in post-conflict countries, specifically addressing the case of the recurrence of the Liberian civil war from 1999 to 2003. In the last few decades, international entities such as the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), NATO, and other global organizations have implemented liberal democratic reforms in post-conflict countries, aiming to ensure stability and prevent a relapse into violent conflict. Supporters of liberal democracy argue that its implementation is crucial for establishing peace and stability in post-conflict and conflict-prone societies globally. However, there has been ongoing debate about whether the introduction of liberal democratic reforms could paradoxically lead to the resurgence of violent conflicts. Critics of this approach contend that democratization and the application of liberal democracy may contain conflictual elements, potentially triggering a return to violent conflict in post-conflict countries.
