Korea has been divided since the end of World War II, when the American administrators divided the Korean peninsula along the 38th parallel with US troops occupying the southern and Soviet troops the northern part. The tensions escalated despite continuing reunification negotiations and open warfare broke out in June 25th, 1950, when North Korea invaded the South. 60 years on, a truce is still all that technically prevents the resuming of open warfare, as no peace treaty has ever been signed.
