The landscape of primary education in Burkina Faso

The school is the place par excellence in which a culture is transmitted and even transformed; this institution appears as the ideological vehicle of a system that often manifests itself in the form of a society. The school also represents the place where new functions and statuses are transmitted to the younger generations, thus favouring the emergence of new social classes. The school as an essential link in the socio-educational system is thus a craftsman of social integration of a country. School and society are therefore closely related. A school has no chance of success unless society itself supports it in its evolution towards a learning, creative, value-driven society. Burkina Faso's primary school has undergone profound changes since the very first school was established in 1898 in Bobo Dioulasso.
