THE LEGITIMACY OF POLITICAL POWER IN AFRICAN STATES

The political thought of J.-J. Rousseau has some operative aspects applicable to the context of African states in the grip of chronic socio-political, economic and cultural crises. Rousseau's political philosophy conveys values that can contribute to stabilizing these societies with a view to social cohesion. The general will can be a factor of national integration for African states whose essence is weakened by ethnotribal ideology. Furthermore, respect for the law, civic-mindedness, patriotism, citizenship education and a culture of peace are all values that can promote peaceful coexistence in Africa and elsewhere in the world. This book can help to understand the political life of societies in general and those of Africa in particular. But beyond that, it is a real tool for political analysis.
