The Muses in John Fowles's Novels
Details
The purpose of this paper was to offer one more interpretation to some of John Fowles's novels. Starting from a few features of this writer's work, we tried to analyze both the evolution of the main feminine characters that appear in the books discussed, as well as the status that they received. However, what shocks us when reading these novels is the writer's honesty. It takes a lot of courage to admit, as a male writer in a male dominated society, that it is actually the dominators who need the dominated and not the other way round. It is said that behind a powerful man stands a more powerful woman. Fowles expressed this in his own way: "A woman's main task is to educate us, to make us see we're not fully educated yet."
