The Oriental Seaman is a semiotic quest for Sindbad's seven voyages. The study purports to investigate the semiotic parameters underlying the structure of these narratives. It aims at exploring the syntagmatic, paradigmatic and signifying relationships. Sindbad's voyages, viewed as one whole coherent paradigm of signs, are a semiotic system structured in a narrative code. They are the symbolic representations of the Eastern - Islamic culture where these tales were germinated. They, therefore, share a set of universal principles, though they sometimes follow culture - specific constraints.

SAMIR AL-SHEIKH (PhD) (geb. 1953) (Kritiker, Dichter, Übersetzer) ist derzeit Professor für Linguistik und Literatur an der Universität Misan, Irak. Seine konzeptionellen Schwerpunkte liegen in den Bereichen Stilistik, Semiotik und Kultur. Er ist der Autor des Buches The Blue Rose at Twilight: On Modern Arabic Verse (Bloomington, 2012).
