The problem of teaching French for specific purposes
Details
At present, the teaching of French at the tertiary level as practiced in Nigeria (with a focus on FLE (French as a foreign language) and translation, has not met the needs of Nigerian learners. In order to enhance the economic, political and social prestige of Nigeria, there is need to strengthen the teaching of FOS (French for Specific Purposes). The status of French at present does not meet the gigantic linguistic need. It is therefore in this context of relative failure, that we believe it is high time to change the provision of French language training in Nigeria. One of the avenues proposed for this purpose in this book is the teaching of FOS. The objective of this book on the one hand is to show that FLE as it is taught in Nigeria is not enough to cover the learning needs of Nigerians. The book also aims at demonstrating the need to generalize the teaching of FOS in the curriculum of universities. For example, FOS can replace the general FLE in the departments. The introduction of FOS will update the bilingualism policy in Nigeria.
