The Rebirth of Multipartyism, Road to Democracy in Sub-Saharan Africa

The democratization process in Cameroon is successfully drifting without genuine democratic structures. From the ruling party to the opposition parties, the people are caught-up in an atmosphere of political despair and democratic stagnancy. Meaningful democracy entails political participation by all stakeholders and the respect for all political parties as equal players in the same political terrain where - free, fair and transparent elections are only guaranteed by a credible independent and impartial electoral structure that respects the ballots of the electorates. For the sake of a peaceful and democratic future for Cameroon, both the ruling party and the opposition must recognize the social, economic and political rights of the people and keep their political agendas in line with the people's democratic aspirations. For Cameroon politics par excellence, there is plausible corroborative evidence of shared culpability between the government and the opposition political parties for compromising democratic values. These undemocratic practices have aggregated to the dwindling opposition political parties in Cameroon since the rebirth of multiparty politics in the early 1990s.
