The Representation of Women in FEMINA
Details
How do Indian women's magazines portray their readers? The present study takes up this question as she analyses FEMINA, a glossy aimed at upper-middle class or upper-class, upper-caste women in India. Using the Foucauldian notion of discourse, Roland Barthes' concept of the rhetoric of the image as well as critical discourse analysis to scrutinise the visual and verbal representation of women in FEMINA, Hoffmann explores the inconsistencies and contradictions inherent in the magazine's portrayal of women and their work, their relationships, their sexuality as well as their understanding of motherhood.
