Details

This book is concerned with the rhetoric of the Greek social movement against genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and its effects on a successful struggle. Pursuing an in-depth, critical discourse analysis I have come up with certain effective discursive techniques of the Greek anti- G.M. movement which were incremental in the widespread public opposition to G.M.Os. These techniques were performed through establishing shared definitions of terms, via the effective popularization of scientific terms by the opponents of G.M.Os and not the large agri-business companies, through the conscientization of the citizens, via the discursive identification of sides and the amputation of profit-driven interest to the proponents of G.M.Os. What is compelling in the Greek case is the outright governmental ban on all G.M.O. releases after a massive media outcry, in a country where, according to Eurobarometers, the knowledge about the effects of biotechnology and genetic engineering is very low and there is little or no debate prior to the introduction of new technologies.
