The Right to Access Environmental Information
Details
It is widely accepted that the right to access environmental information not only empowers citizens to seek and retrieve data about our environment, but is crucial for its protection. This book combines all the aspects of this important environmental right which are analysed in regard of UK national law, international law, EU law and the law of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). The historical evolution of this right is the starting point for analysis. The substantive provisions of the Aarhus Convention, the 2003/4/EC Directive on public access to Environmental Information, the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 are examined in parallel. Special attention is also given to specific UK enactments regarding registers containing environmental information. All relevant ECHR articles which have been interpreted as including a fundamental right to access environmental information are examined. This book is aimed at academics, law practitioners, environmentalists and any person wanting to gain an in-depth knowledge of UK, European and international law on access to environmental information.
