The Role of Resveratrol in the Prevention and Treatment of Cataracts

Non-surgical approaches to delay or prevent cataract formation have gained increasing interest in recent years. Among the numerous pharmacological candidates, resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic compound with potent antioxidant properties, has been extensively studied for its therapeutic potential. This book evaluates the available evidence supporting the use of resveratrol in preventing or delaying cataract development. Resveratrol holds significant promise as a non-surgical pharmacological agent for cataract prevention, particularly through its antioxidant and gene-regulatory functions. Combining pirenoxine (Catalin) with resveratrol and potentially with agents like taurine, N-acetyl cysteine or lipoic acid represents a rational, multi-targeted approach to delay cataractogenesis. Given the complementary mechanisms, particularly in oxidative stress modulation, protein protection, and cellular repair. This strategy could lead to more effective non-surgical management of cataract, especially in high-risk groups such as the elderly and diabetics.
