There appears to be a general agreement of opinion among grammarians that the most heterogeneous, and at the same time the least understood of the traditional parts-of-speech is, without any question, the category of 'adverb'. It has been equated, at times, to a dustbin into which any word whose grammatical status is not clear and which is not easily handled elsewhere in the grammar has been discarded. Adverbs, even though not as frequently employed in a sentence as verbs or nouns are, should not, for that matter, be cast aside as unimportant in the string of elements making up the sentence, as they play an essential role in text construction. Writers, in order to heighten the dramatic effect of description or assess the truthfulness of actions or comments, as well as their validity in the face of reality, instinctively use adverbs.
