The Scars of Cherop

This play highlights the struggles and challenges faced by Cherop, her mother Cherotich, and other characters in their community. Cherop, a young woman, is confronted with social pressures such as circumcision and arranged marriage. Her mother, Cherotich, tries to protect and guide her through these trials, but they both have to face oppressive traditions and expectations. Themes such as domestic violence, gender inequalities, and family struggles are explored in the play. The tragic fate of some characters, like Kiplimo, underscores the consequences of tradition and social pressure. Despite the challenges, the characters strive to find the strength and resilience to confront their reality and fight for a better future. The narrative sheds light on the struggle for emancipation, justice, and dignity in a complex and oppressive cultural context.

Kiplangat Nathan Sikor, a writer and researcher of Ugandan origin, lives in Turku, Finland, where he is pursuing his master's degree in French language and literature. The author of a novel titled The Boy from Sebeiland and four collections of poems, he is also a talented French teacher.
