The Socio-Economic Status of Afar under Federal Ethiopia

Federal system of governance plays a crucial role in the social and economic development of constituent units within a federation. It provides a framework that empowers constituent units to address their unique social and economic challenges, encourages local autonomy and decision-making, promotes economic cooperation and resource sharing, and contributes to political stability. Federal system creates enabling conditions for constituent units by decentralizing power, guaranteeing local autonomy and fostering development by providing authority to sub-national units to enact their own economic policies. Ethiopia is the youngest in the world of federations and the contribution of federal system for the social and economic development of constituent units in the Ethiopian federation have not been systematically studied and the factors contributing for the underdevelopment of sub-national units are not well identified and explained. This book sets as its objective to shade light on this important dimension of the Ethiopian federal dispensation.

Demillie Mollaw Kebede (PhD) is Assistant Professor of Federal and Governance Studies at the Ethiopian Defense Command and Staff College, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He has done his PhD at the Center for Federal and Governance Studies of Addis Ababa University and his MA in Social Anthropology at the same university.
