The Tai-Ahoms: A Socio-Economic Study

The book is about present Socio-Economic status of the mighty Tai-Ahoms. This is the community which had ruled Assam for about 600 years until it had lost its power in 1826 as a result of Yandaboo Treaty. The Tai-Ahoms established a Tai kingdom in Assam in 1228 under Siu-Ka-Pha, the first Tai-Ahom king and ruled Assam uninterrupted for 600 years. This is perhaps only ruling community who had abandoned their language and religion and mingled with the local community. More over, The economy of the Assam during the Tai-Ahoms was a self-sufficient village economy rest on the Paik system. The social,religious and economic policy followed by the Ahom kings created the base for the present day modern Assam. The current work deals with the Background of the Economy of Assam during the rule of the Tai-Ahoms and about the present socio-economic status of the Tai-Ahom community.

Pranjal Protim Buragohain is currently the Assistant Professor of the Department of Economics, Dibrugarh University. His research area is on development economics. He has been credited with two books and about a dozen of research papers published in different journals and edited volumes.
