The Trials of Oscar Wilde
Details
The prosecution of Oscar Wilde in the spring of 1895 was one of the most sensational and public trials of the Victorian age. The public interest in the trials of Oscar Wilde was enormous and the press coverage of his sex scandal quickly upstaged his plays. All the major newspapers in London covered the trials to the smallest detail during the months from March to May 1895. As a consequence Wilde was publicly humiliated and his literary reputation was brought to ruin. By analysing written discourse used in the newspapers covering the trials, this book aims to scrutinise the linguistic processes of the written media that reflect and contribute to the dominant cultural norms of a historical period. This work is relevant for the students of communication, language and linguistics or media studies, or the researchers concerned with the field of study that includes discourse analysis of media events and their connection to the socio-cultural structures.
