The UN in Kosovo
Details
Kosovo set an important example in 1999 in terms of
humanitarian interventions and international
administrations. The UN administration in Kosovo was
established following the intervention and continues
to exist even after the declaration of independence.
In this study, I will talk about international
administrations and their impacts on the subject
states' sovereignty. I will start with a brief
history of international administrations and try to
explain them in the framework of the UN. After that I
will come to the legal bases for international
administration by the UN in the UN charter, in
principles of international law and in the UN
Security Council Resolutions. Following this part,
the case of Kosovo will be examined in terms of the
mandate of the UN mission in Kosovo (UNMIK).
Implementation of the mandate in partnership with the
EU and OSCE, with a control by the Security Council
will come next and there will be some talk about how
the local population relate to all this and what the
shortcomings are. This study was prepared for
understanding the concept of international
administration better and aims to help those who
wants to understand it in the circumstances of Kosovo.
