The View from Primrose Hill

Author's anecdotes and experiences in the Swinging Sixties of London.

The book tells the story of a young man`s experiences in the first year of a two and a half year commercial apprenticeship with the Rank Organization in London starting at the tender age of 17. He lived during these two and a half years in a residential club for young men newly arrived in London in Primrose Hill, where he shared a room with two other young me in a similar position. The stories in the book describe some of his adventures in settling in to life in the world of entertainment in the big city. In 1957 London was slowly emerging from the depressing, post war years and was already showing signs of becoming the London of the Swinging Sixties

Michael Simpson was born in Manchester in 1939 and moved to Hampshire in 1945. Education at Prices School, Fareham was followed by a three year management training programme in London and then 2 years National Service in the Royal Signals as a Special Operator with Wireless Intelligence in Germany. Following Army release in 1961 he moved to live and work in Germany before returning to the UK in 1967 following his marriage and birth of his son. He then trained as an Export Salesman and for the next thirty five years worked for a number of companies in the textile trade in the UK, Switzerland and Germany travelling widely all over the world. Following retirement he gave English lessons to senior management personnel in leading German companies.
