The Vulnerable Self

The vulnerability of the human being lies, as expressed in the Latin word from which it derives, in the inevitable condition of the wound. Tearing the surface, breaking the continuity of the fabric, biological or existential, dislocates, isolates, summons pain, brings the experience of finitude. We are wounded; it is our vulnerable condition. The response to our vulnerability must be care, hospitality, compassion, companionship, love. The hyper-consumer society makes, almost impossible, the deployment of the profoundly human, because of the superficial and the artificial put in the spectacle of everyday life.
