The Wood that Makes Our Cities

Tracing the trees with which our cities are built: about the challenges of the sustainable use of wood as a building material

Wood is an ideal building material for sustainable architecture. It grows back and absorbs large quantities of CO2. But where does it actually come from in each case, and how will we make forestry and wood processing fit for the future? In what ways are conventional notions of professions and qualifications in architecture, engineering, and construction tested by using wood as building material?

French journalist Michèle Leloup together with architect François Leclercqa pioneer of timber construction in Francehave for a long time explored the ecological, economic, industrial, and technical challenges of using timber for major structures and urban architecture. This book summarizes their findings using examples from the French forestry and construction industry. It also takes a look at Austria and the innovative work by Hermann Kaufmann, an internationally revered leader in the further development of traditional timber architecture. In addition, the book features five projects by Leclercq Associés.

Michèle Leloup ist Journalistin, Autorin und Mitglied der Académie d'Architecture und des Vermittlungsausschusses des Hauses der Architektur in Paris.

Cyrille Weiner ist Fotograf und Herausgeber. Seit den frühen 2000er-Jahren erforscht er mit der Fotografie unser Verhältnis zur Stadt und zum Raum. Bei Park Books hat er u.a. Napoli Super Modern (2020) und Paris Haussmann (2017/2020) mit herausgegeben.

Jad Hussein ist Grafikdesigner und führt in Paris sein eigenes Studio Look Specific. Er ist auch Herausgeber verschiedenen Bücher und lehrt als Dozent für Typografie und Grafik.

François Leclercq ist Architekt und Stadtplaner sowie Gründer des Pariser Architektur- und Planungsbüros Leclercq Associés. Er ist Mitglied des Beratungsausschusses des International Grand Paris Workshop und hat für das Ministerium für Wohnungswesen das Referenzhandbuch zum Qualitätswohnen in Frankreich geschrieben. Er lehrte an verschiedenen Universitäten.

Paul Laigle ist Architekt und Partner im Architektur- und Stadtplanungsbüro Leclercq Associés. Er ist Spezialist für Architektur mit natürlichen Ressourcen, insbesondere den Holzbau.
