Theatre of Cruelties
Details
The Brazilian colonial period is linked to the political and economic conjunctures of the modern era, which corresponds to the period of insertion of Portuguese America in the international context. For that to happen, it was necessary to start wars, which were narrated in great histories and praised the brave warriors and strategists. The chronicles of the Brazilian colonial period, in turn, reported the customs, rituals, and warfare, as well as the alliances to maintain the conquests, even if they were provisional. Among all the motifs of ethnic interest that were narrated by the chroniclers, what most caught our attention were the descriptions of the warlike aspects of the indigenous cultures. In general, they present negative images about the warrior culture of the indigenous people, especially in the initial stages of the conquest of Brazil, in the period before the fusion of knowledge and warlike strategies.
