Formerly based in Edmonton, Alberta, he was a columnist for the Edmonton Journal, and has published three bestselling novels. His first novel, Choke Hold, was a finalist for the Rogers Writers'' Trust Fiction Prize and a winner of the Henry Kreisel Award, and his second novel, The Garneau Block, was a longlisted nominee for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. The Book of Stanley is in development as a television series. His fourth novel, Toby: A Man, will be published by HarperCollins in Winter, 2010.
