High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Douglas Todd Staples (born August 24, 1963) is the current Commissioner of the Texas Department of Agriculture and a member of the Republican Party. Prior to his election as Agriculture Commissioner, he was a member of both houses of the Texas State Legislature and a member of the city council in Palestine, Texas. Staples was unopposed for renomination in the GOP primary held on March 2, 2010. In the general election set for November 2, he faces the populist Democrat Hank Gilbert, his original statewide opponent from 2006. Gilbert in his primary defeated Richard S. "Kinky" Friedman, who was an Independent gubernatorial candidate in 2006. Friedman, who said he will not again seek public office, has pledged to support Gilbert in the bid to unseat Staples.
