The Tokyo bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics was the unsuccessful campaign by Tokyo, the capital of Japan, to be chosen by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Tokyo was eliminated on the second ballot in IOC voting on October 2, 2009. The city previously held the 1964 Summer Olympics. Tokyo was one of the bidders listed on the short list of candidates announced on June 4, 2008. Tokyo''s competitors were Chicago (United States), Madrid (Spain), and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); Rio won the bid. If Tokyo had won the bid, the games would have been held July 29 to August 14, and the Paralympics would have been held August 31 to September 11.
