Towards Community Empowerment for Poverty Reduction

Most of the Afghan population lives in rural areas where agriculture and husbandry are the main sources of their income. The agricultural production is not enough to meet all the needs of the local residents. In this case, a large number of rural people suffer from poverty. In addition, local communities face lack of access to basic services in the most part of the county. Local communities have suffered more than any other social entities in terms of poverty and lack of access to basic services, including education, health, safe-drinking water, useful irrigation system, sufficient roads, and many more facilities. This book, therefore, presents that local communities need external assistance in order to achieve a more moderately prosperous life. This book aims to outline poverty situation throughout the country and addresses rural development programs, including National Solidarity Program (NSP) and National Area-Based Development Program (NABDP), which were launched by Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) of Afghanistan with financial and technical support from the international community in order to empower local communities and eradicate the poverty.
