Translating Aesthetics in African Literary Works:
Details
This book entitled Translating Aesthetics in African Literary Works: A Pragmatic Approach to Rendering Style is a direct offshoott of my doctoral research work. It critically examines the translation of aesthetics, notably style, in four famous sub-Saharan African novels. The study aims to verify whether the stylistic devices identified in the source language novels were adequately translated into the target language novels, as well as to identify, describe and explain the translation strategies used. To achieve these objectives, the qualitative research design, notably the Descriptive Translation Studies methodology is employed. The study hypothesizes that the stylistic devices in the source texts confer on them a dominant and timeless aesthetic value which today has led literary scholars and critics to consider them as classics in African literature, that the translation strategies used in the translation of the source language texts are appropriate and effective and equally confer on the target texts the same dominant and timeless value as the source texts.
