Translating the Qur anic Mutashabihat 'i.e. polysemic' verses adopts a new linguistic methodology for analyzing Qur anic texts through the use of Vermeer's Skopostheorie and Nord's Functional Approach, in three selected English translations of the Qur an. This book investigates how multi-layered meanings can account for the ambiguity in the semantic value, which is inherent in Qur anic discourse. Muhammad A. A. Taghian is a visiting scholar at SOAS, University of London and a lecturer of Translation and Linguistics at The American University in Cairo and Helwan University,Egypt. His main research interest is translating and analyzing Qur nic discourses. Among his recent publications is a study on the concept of wife-beating in (Q 4:34).
