Details

This book details advances in such topics as surgery and non-pharmacological treatments for atherosclerotic disease of the aorta, pulmonary arterial hypertension, cytoprotective mechanisms in the vasculature and the "Broken Heart Syndrome".

Translational medicine underpins vascular medicine. It is fundamental to understanding how we treat patients with vascular disease and more importantly, how to prevent it. It is the rationale for drug design and production. Vascular medicine and translational medicine will take over and become the main reason for referring patients to hospital. Therefore, hospital-based clinicians working with basic scientists need to know about translational medicine, which educates and informs them about vascular medicine and how management should be based.

This book is a primer for translational vascular medicine and discusses the evolving and exciting areas of basic science applied to vascular medicine. The book is based on the third vascular biology conference held at The Royal College of Physicians in 2008. It provides a large amount of new basic and clinical information and the contributors are world leaders.

Dr Clive Handler BSc, MD, MRCP,FACC, FESC is an Honorary Consultant in the National Pulmonary Hypertension Unit at The Royal Free Hospital, London and Consultant Cardiologist at Highgate Hospital, London. He was previously Consultant Cardiologist at Northwick Park and St Mary's Hospitals, London. He trained at Guy's Hospital Medical School and at St Luke's Hospital Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin. Dr Gerry Coghlan MD, FRCP is Consultant Cardiologist and Director of the National Pulmonary Hypertension Unit at the Royal Free Hospital. He trained in Dublin and at Harefield and the Royal Free Hospitals. He is an international authority on Pulmonary Hypertension but has wide interests in all aspects of the management of coronary heart disease and angioplasty. He has written several books with Dr Clive Handler as well as scientific papers on pulmonary hypertension and other aspects of cardiology.

Klappentext

Modern medicine is increasingly focused on integrating the results of basic scientific research and clinical research, translational medicine to provide improved patient care. This collaborative approach which is a two way street has proven very useful in various fields in cardiovascular medicine.

Translational Vascular Medicine: Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Treatment provides extensive information on new and exciting advances in such topics as surgery and non-pharmacological treatments for atherosclerotic disease of the aorta, pulmonary arterial hypertension, cytoprotective mechanisms in the vasculature, and the Broken Heart Syndrome. The Editors and their expert panel of contributors have explored the bi-directional and integrated approaches of translational cardiovascular medicine, linking basic science to patient care.

This book is a highly useful method to understand these complex topics and provides considerable insight into important areas of translational cardiovascular medicine and key bibliographies for the reader.
