High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Treaty of Mount Dexter was signed between the United States and the Choctaws. The treaty was signed November 16, 1805 in the Choctaw Nation. The 4,142,720-acre (16,765.0 km2) area ceded was from the Natchez District to the Tombigbee Alabama River watershed, mostly in present-day Mississippi. The Choctaw are a Native American people originally from the Southeastern United States (Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana). They are of the Muskogean linguistic group. The word Choctaw (alternatively spelt as Chahta, Chactas, Chato, Tchakta, and Chocktaw) may derive from the Castilian word chato, meaning flat. Noted 20th century anthropologist John Swanton suggested that the name was derived from a Choctaw leader.
