Trends in cardiac procedures
Details
This is the first detailed study of the leading revascularisation procedures for treating coronary artery disease (CAD), coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in New South Wales, Australia. This book explores the trends and differentials in CABG and PCI rates by age, gender, marital status, length of stay, country of birth, Aboriginality, Area Health Service, co-existing conditions and deaths using NSW hospital discharge data from 1990-91 to 2001-02.Small area analysis methods are used to assess the Local Government Area level variation in procedure rates. Moreover by applying life table and potential life lost methods on leading causes of deaths in NSW, the effects of the elimination of CAD and premature deaths are assessed. Research questions addressed in the study include how the introduction of new operative methods has contributed to the change in trends and outcomes and how the extended life expectancy could be utilised for socio-economic planning.
