Tsunami
Details
The novel Tsunami is the successful presentation of the deadliest Bhola Cyclone of 11 November 1970 that hit the southern coastal districts of Bangladesh and took away 300,000 - 550,000 lives creating a storm surge of about 35 ft. The story of the novel resulted from the eyewitness experience of the playwright Abdul Muttalib. The original form of this novel was a radio play entitled Jaloswas meaning mountain high waves or wave-mountains in Bengali. The radio play Tsunami won the first prize in the 1977 National Radio Play Competition. Mr. Muttalib's uncommon creative skill came to light after the broadcast of the play Tsunami from Dhaka Radio Station. The novel contains a picturesque description of the characteristics of the coastal char lands, the traits of people living therein, and the role of nature. It has been, so to say, a virtual presentation of people's grief, happiness, hardship, and affection. Readers will enjoy the flowing of the story and the dialogues, and most importantly, know the risks associated with lives in coastal areas in today's climate changing environment that often brings about storms of unusual strengths.
