Turkish Democracy Between Political Islam and Kemalism

This book examines two main ideologies in Turkey: Political Islam and Kemalism. Differences of Islam, Islamism and Political Islam is given accurately in order to get clear understanding of current Turkish Politics. It is shown that Kemalism and Political Islam are two main ideologies that shape Turkish Politics which are rooted from late Ottoman Period. Islamic movements in Turkey and their engagement to Democracy are also examined. Direction of Turkey in light of latest developments in the country are given clearly. With the analysis of the Political Islam and Kemalism, an in-depth view is taken on the conflicting institutional norms and values that evolved in modern Turkey and that characterize to a certain extent the conflicts that exist within its democratic political system.

Bayram Aliyev schloss sein Studium an der Universität Siegen mit dem Masterstudiengang "Wege zur Demokratie(n)" ab. Derzeit ist er Doktorand an der Universität Istanbul im Bereich Politikwissenschaft und Internationale Beziehungen. Zu seinen Forschungsinteressen gehört die türkische Außen- und Innenpolitik.
