Two cultures and the self: Are there differences?

Understaning how women feel about themselves, their roles, their values and the opportunities they have in life according to the culture they live in is very important for the process of development. This can not be comprehended without analyzing social change--a continuous process occuring throughout history. The process of social change discussed focuses on the transformation of the streotyped image of women as a second class citizen who can not be productive. How women see themselves and construct their self-concept are very important to understanding the psychology of women. However, what is more important is to understand the cultural differnces that surround gender stereotyping and the formation of the self. Hence, this cross-cultural study is important as it explores what is universal and what's not about the factors that affect the formation of the self.

Sherine Ramzy received a Ph.D. in Academic Counseling Psychology from Walden University in 2005 and a Diploma in Teaching Children with Learning Difficulties from University of London in 2007. She has been teaching at the American University in Cairo since 2003 and has many research interests espeically in social psychology and eduation.
