It was launched Saturday 03-05-2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and it was built over a 3 year period as a fun/hobby project. This submarine was Peter Madsen's 3rd submarine design and it's the largest privately-built submarine in the world. UC3-Nautilus was built by Peter Madsen and a lot of volunteers, and the submarine has cost approx. 200.000 dollars ( 1.5 million DKK). On the time of launch, the submarine was a bare hull and was not fully equipped yet, but still weighed 32 tons and the functions that worked, operated diesel-electric. On launchday, Nautilus was towed to the art installation M/S Half Machine and further prepared. In August, Nautilus could sail on its own, as steering and one of the two diesel engines were built in. On the first real trip on their own, the submarine was sailed by a group of people, and nearly all of them, was related to the Royal Danish Navy submarinedivision, which is closed now They were to sail the submarine and evaluate her maneuverability, in which they gave a positive criticism.
