Typically, graduates of the Staff College are commanders in the Uganda People's Defence Force. Other African countries also send their cadets to the college for training. The junior staff college is located in Qaddafi Barracks, in the city of Jinja, approximately 87 kilometres (54 mi), by road, east of Kampala, Uganda's capital city. The creation of the Uganda Junior Staff College was first announced by the Chief of Defense Forces, Aronda Nyakairima, in February 2006. In May 2006, the college graduated its pioneer class of thirty nine (39) military officers. The college was officially commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the Commander in Chief of the Uganda People's Defense Force.
